What is ALICE?

What is ALICE? ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are individuals and families who work full-time but still struggle to afford basic necessities like housing, food, child care, transportation, health care, and technology.

How many people are ALICE?

According to United for ALICE, an estimated 40 million adults in the United States are ALICE. This represents about one in three working adults.

For Missourians, ALICE represents 31% of the total households living in the represented population. In Taney and Stone counties, ALICE represents 7,000 households.

Who is ALICE?

ALICE can be anyone, but they are more likely to be women, people of color, and people with disabilities. They are also more likely to live in rural areas or in high-cost urban areas.

  • Often work two or more jobs

  • Often include caregivers of family members

  • Live paycheck to paycheck and are forced to make impossible choices
